East Arlington sits against the Cambridge and Somerville lines: two-family houses close together, narrow streets, and curb space that is usually taken by morning. Heading up Mass Ave through the Center toward the Heights, the town climbs. Single-family homes get bigger, the side streets get steeper, and Mass Ave itself backs up at rush hour. The two ends of town need two different plans.
Parking a Moving Truck in Arlington
A normal daytime move on an unrestricted street, with the truck parked legally, doesn't need a permit. Overnight is different: Arlington doesn't allow parking on public streets for more than an hour between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. without a waiver, so the truck can't stay out front overnight. If you need to park in a restricted zone, or back the truck up to the curb, you need a Special Permit for Loading and Unloading from the Chief of Police. Our guide covers both.

Snow changes the plan. Once Arlington declares a snow emergency, waivers and permits are void and the plows get the streets. A storm on moving day can cancel a permit you already hold, so watch the forecast in the days before and keep a backup date in mind.

Do I need a permit to park the moving truck?
Usually not. If the truck sits along the curb on a street with no restrictions and you're done during the day, there's nothing to file. The exceptions are a posted no-parking zone, or backing the truck up to the curb. For those you need a Special Permit for Loading and Unloading from the Chief of Police, so call the Arlington Police before the move, not on the day.
What happens if it snows on moving day?
When Arlington declares a snow emergency, the streets go to the plows. Waivers and permits are void until it's lifted, and a truck can't wait on the street. That can mean a new date. If a storm is in the forecast the week of your move, call us early about the date.
When is the best time to move?
Weekdays and off-season dates are easiest to book. Warm months fill up fast. If your closing or lease date is fixed, book as soon as you have it, and if you can move on a Tuesday, do.
Can the moving truck stay overnight on Arlington street?
No. Nothing stays on a public street for more than an hour between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. without a waiver, and a moving truck shouldn't count on getting one. It has to sit on private property overnight. If your move runs two days, sort that out before you book.
